* General information.Mercerisation is generally accredited to be invented by John Mercer in Lancashire (UK) during the 1840's. It is a process of chemically treating cotton fibre. This generally has three main effects. It strengthens the fibres, it swells the fibre which produces a more "reflective"(gives it a "sheen") item and it produces an item which accepts dyes more readily.
